Permaculture Principle #5 - Use and Value Renewable Resources

Hi and welcome to another week of Permaculture Principles on the blog!

This week I am going to talk about Principle #5: Use and Value Renewable Resources.

This is one of my absolute favorite principles, and the one I use most in my daily life and gardening. For example. I use all the cardboard a acquire from different online orders to either fill up my compost bin, or as sheet mulch when making a “no dig” garden bed. Another obvious example of this is that i reuse all my green waste (lawn clippings, plants) by composting it and making precious soil.

The symbol for this principle is a horse. The horse represents both a renewable service and a renewable recourse. Animals are the perfect examples for this principle as they continue to benefit us and our land with their work (horses pulling carts, chickens scratching preparing garden beds, or cows grazing) day after day, if you look after them well!

Even if you don’t have a big garden, there are so many ways you can apply and use this principle in your daily life. Many of them we already do bit perhaps are not thinking about in these terms. Here’s a few examples:

  • Drying our clothes with the help of sunshine and the breeze

  • Using large trees as shade from the sun on a hot day at the park

  • Having our kids playing on the ever lasting beaches and in the sea

  • Eating fruit from apple, lemon, or mulberry trees

I would love to hear from you guys if you can think of other ways to apply this principle in your daily life!

See you next week
