Permaculture Principle #4 - Apply Self Regulation and Accept Feedback

Hi! The blog is back this week after a little break.

This week I am going to talk about the 4th Principle of Permaculture - Apply Self Regulation and Accept Feedback.

We often hear that we need to reduce our impact on the earth, meaning we should do less things that are harmful to our planet. When researching this topic I came across a wonderful picture with a quote that says “Increase your impact” rather than reduce. How about we all actually start actioning things that will increase our positive impact on the earth, instead of thinking about what we can do less of. A few examples here:

  • Start growing your own produce, if only just some herbs on the balcony

  • Involve your children in garden activities to pass on the information

  • Start a worm farm/compost bin to compost your food scraps

  • Reach out to an elder and see if they need a hand with their gardening

This principle is such a good one, well suited for all aspects of life. We can of course apply it in our garden, learning from the feedback that it gives us: Is that the best spot for my tomatoes? Does my garden need to attract more insects to deal with certain pest problems?

This will over the years make us much better gardeners and therefore give us better yields!

Other than gardening, I encourage you guys to also try and implement this principle into your everyday life. It is a great one for your relationships with your children or your partner. If we can accept and learn from the feedback we get, I think the world would quickly be a better place for everyone.
